Pakistan Navy has a major presence in the Indian Ocean and has a major dominance. They protect the waters of Pakistan from foreign threats, and if someone wants to dominate the seas, the Pakistan Navy is the best place for them. Every FSC pass student can apply for a job at the Pakistan Navy. There are also two types of major classifications. One is the actual Pakistan Navy, and the other is the Pakistan Merchant Navy. Their training and jobs are way different, as one is for national defence and the other is for trade on international borders.
PN (Pakistan Navy) - Military Track:
This is the main military track, very different from the Merchant Navy track. In this, you go through a rigorous and disciplined training and enter the Military hierarchy. You join as a PN Cadet. After the training, you are streamlined into one of the many branches of the Pakistan Navy.
1. Operations Branch
This is the command and the combat wing of the entire navy. Here you are training to manage weapon systems, which can eventually lead to you commanding an entire naval vessel.
- Role on Duty: Weapon deployment, ship navigation, tactical maneuvers, air defense, and anti-submarine warfare.
- Sub-Specializations: There are many subclasses of the operations branch. You can even be a pilot, a Navy SEAL, and if you like being stealthy, we have submarines as well.
- Aviation: Becoming a Naval Pilot (Helicopters/Fixed-wing aircraft for sea navigation and surveillance).
- Submarines: Operating stealth diesel-electric submarines.
- SSG (N): Naval Special Forces (Navy SEALs) for amphibious warfare, anti-terrorism, and clearance diving.
- Degree Awarded: BS in Maritime Science (from Pakistan Naval Academy or Bahria University).
2. Marine Engineering Branch:
These are the engineers who actually run the ship, even though it is commanded by an officer from the operations branch; the real functioning of the ship depends upon its engineers. They also perform various roles that are very specialized.
- Role on Duty: Managing gas turbines, diesel engines, auxiliary machinery, propulsion systems, fuel management, and damage control.
- Work Environment: Primarily inside the engine rooms and machinery control rooms of warships and submarines.
- Degree Awarded: Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) in Mechanical Engineering from PNEC NUST (Karachi).
Overall, the degrees are awarded by prestigious institutes, and no one can dare challenge the merit of the glorious Pakistan Navy. The pride of Pakistan and the guardians of its sea borders.
3. Weapon Engineering Branch:
These chaps are the tech brains of the navy; they understand naval warfare on a whole other level and work in a legacy of their own. Marvellous knowledge of software and electronics.
- Role on Duty: Maintenance and integration of missile systems, naval artillery, combat management systems, radars, sonars, and electronic warfare suites.
- Work Environment: Combat Information Centers (CIC) and specialized electronics workshops on ships.
- Degree Awarded: B.E. in Electrical/Electronics Engineering from PNEC NUST (Karachi). Again, the degree itself proves that they do not lack merit!
4. Supply Branch:
These are the logistical masterminds of the entire navy. A warship can not survive without a proper supply network to keep it properly supplied at all times. They are just as important as any branch.
- Role on Duty: Managing naval funds, multi-million dollar military contracts, catering/rations for hundreds of crew members, clothing, warehousing, and spare-parts supply chain logistics.
- Work Environment: Shared between shore-based naval depots and administrative offices on ships.
- Degree Awarded: BS in Supply Chain Management / Management Sciences (from Pakistan Naval Academy or Bahria University).
This was the military part, many different marvellous branches, a bit more prestigious, but the odds are just as high. You will end up commanding ships, managing their systems, and managing their logistics
.
Merchant Navy - Commercial Track
This track is administered by the Pakistan Marine Academy (PMA). This track further splits into 2 main groups. Merchant navy, in a nutshell, is those guys that manage cargo ships rather than battleships. They are not trained in warfare; they are trained in sailing through storms and moving from one port to another. They work on private contracts and sail the ships of their contractors, carrying cargo around the world.
1 Nautical Branch:
In this branch, they are trained in navigation and command. They command the contracted ships across the ocean, from one port to another. They are taught to command their vessel through storms and difficult conditions.
- Core Duties: Plotting voyage routes using global charts, GPS, and electronic navigation systems. Ensuring the safe loading, securing, and unloading of thousands of tons of cargo (containers, oil, gas, cars). Maintaining ship stability, safety gear (lifeboats), and managing the deck crew (sailors).
- Medical: Must have perfect 6/6 vision
- Degree Awarded: Associate Degree in Ship Management / Nautical Science (Affiliated with NED University of Engineering & Technology).
2 Marine Engineering Branch:
These guys manage the main engineering of their vessel. While the nautical branch commands, these guys manage the actual machinery.
- Core Duties: Parts mid-ocean.
- Medical: Slight vision impairment is sometimes relaxable if corrected with glasses (unlike the Nautical branch), but you must not be colorblind.
- Degree Awarded: Associate Degree in Marine Engineering (Affiliated with NED University of Engineering & Technology).
If you made it this far into this article, you may have my personal gratitude. I hope this was informative for naval enthusiasts who just passed their intermediate. I wish you very good luck in your path forward, and I shall now take my leave. Please check out our other articles for even more knowledge. See you guys in another article!
